Job summary

Indian Health Service is seeking a Medical Technician (Laboratory Support) to perform a broad range of clinical laboratory tests across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and blood banking in a Federal setting.

The role involves evaluating results, operating and maintaining instruments, processing specimens, and ensuring quality and compliance with CAP, CLIA, and safety standards.

Qualifications

• GS-4: Six months general experience; specialized experience in medical laboratory support; or related education.
• GS-5: One year specialized experience in CLIA-compliant laboratory tasks; or related education.
• GS-6/GS-7: Increasingly responsible laboratory testing, results validation, specimen processing, and quality assurance duties.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory tests in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and blood banking.
• Evaluate test results, recognize abnormalities, and troubleshoot or repeat procedures as needed.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments; prepare reagents and culture media; monitor quality control.
• Collect and process patient specimens; accession and track in laboratory systems; prepare samples for referral testing.
• Validate and document results; communicate findings to healthcare providers; support accreditation and safety requirements.
