Qualifications

• Must have a state-approved school of medication administration.
• Must carry current CNA certification issued by state agency.
• Must be willing to abide by restrictions placed on the job by state agency.
• Must be a certified nursing assistant.

Responsibilities

• Administers PRN medications after authorization by the facility’s licensed nurse or physician.
• Organizes medication duties to pour, pass, and document routine prescribed medications and PRN meds as instructed.
• Documents all PRNs according to State Standards.
• observes and reports reactions and side effects to the licensed nurse.
• Takes and records vital signs before medications that may affect them.
• Prepares and documents medications that the aide is permitted to administer.
• Administers oxygen by nasal channel or non-sealing mask only in emergencies and documents the event.
• Counts narcotics as directed by the charge nurse and documents on the medication sheet.
