Job summary

FedEx Freight is seeking a CDL holder to operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles or straight trucks, and perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure safety.

You will handle freight with forklifts and pallet jacks, secure loads, maintain shipment records, and communicate with Dispatch about arrivals, delays, or issues. Occasional road duties and hazmat compliance may apply. Starting pay is $25.64 per hour.

Qualifications

• Must possess a class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification.
• Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
• Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations.
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day.
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week.
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member.

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks.
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer.
• Perform freight handling using forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
• Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation.
• Comply with hazardous material regulations and placarding, as required.
• Communicate with Dispatch regarding delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc.
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service.
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs.
• Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities.
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler.
• Chain vehicle tires, as required.
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures.
• Perform other duties as required.
