Job summary

UNC Medical Center's Cardiac Specialty unit offers a Student Nurse Extern I opportunity for prelicensure nursing students to gain hands-on experience within a high-acuity cardiac setting. You will work with an RN partner to provide patient care under supervision and learn in a hospital/nursing context.

The externship runs May 24 – July 31, 2027, and includes tasks such as vital signs, patient education, admissions/discharge support, and collaboration with the care team.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides direct personal care and routine nursing tasks under RN supervision.
• Assists with examinations, procedures, and procurement of equipment during emergencies.
