Job summary

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC, is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position in the Cardiac Specialty unit. The externship runs May 24 – July 31, 2027, with RN partner supervision and 1:1 patient care support in a high-acuity setting.

You will work 36 hours per week on site, under supervision, gaining hands-on nursing experience in a 20-bed cardiac unit including LVAD, TVR, TR bands, and post-catheterization care.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina DHHS and BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information; report significant changes to RN.
• Provide direct and indirect patient care under supervision.
• Assist with admissions, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Support routine examinations and procedures; maintain unit readiness.
• Assist in behavior management and therapeutic milieu in psychiatric settings when applicable.
