Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position in the Cardiovascular Acute Care Unit (12 beds) for May 24 – July 31, 2027. This temporary role, supervised by an RN partner, provides prelicensure nursing students with hands-on care experience within their Nursing Assistant I scope under faculty oversight.

The extern will assist with vital signs, specimen collection, routine care, and patient/family education, while learning to function as part of the patient care team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start of externship.
• Nursing Assistant I status and BLS certification are preferred or required as noted.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs routine care such as vital signs, specimen collection, simple wound care, and glucose checks.
• Provides direct personal care and supports patient and family education as directed by RN.
