Job summary

UNC Health's Cardiac Specialty unit seeks a Student Nurse Extern I to support nursing students gaining hands-on experience under RN supervision in a high-acuity cardiac setting. The extern will collaborate with an RN partner, perform supervised patient care activities, and learn essential nursing skills in a structured externship.

The program runs May 24 – July 31, 2027, and emphasizes safety, learning, and professional growth within UNC Medical Center’s Cardiac Specialty.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Active enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I certification required by NC DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information under supervision.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide routine patient care per plan of care (vital signs, measurements, specimen collection, etc.).
• Assist with activities of daily living and 1:1 patient/family support.
• Support staff with routine tasks and ensure unit cleanliness and supplies.
