Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers is seeking a Bridge Crew Leader to guide a crew in repair, maintenance, and replacement of bridges and structures on Virginia roadways. You will fabricate elements, read plans, and ensure safe, efficient work across multiple sites.

Candidates must lead with strong communication, perform calculations, and uphold safety standards; CDL/DOT card within 11 months is required. This is a full-time, on-site role with opportunities to advance and mentor others.

Qualifications

• Ability to lead, direct, and train others.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations, to measure, layout construction elements on bridges and culverts.
• Ability to perform physically demanding heavy manual labor, to work at heights, in and over water, around heavy traffic conditions, irregular terrain, and other adverse conditions.
• Ability to read, interpret, apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals. Ability to read and interpret bridge plans.
• Considerable knowledge of bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, safety practices and concrete finishing techniques.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in computers and software and basic knowledge of inventory procedures.
• Skill in the operation of equipment used for highway, and/or bridge maintenance.
• Skill in the use of various hand, power and carpentry tools, concrete forming and finishing methods and fabricating steel components and welding.

Responsibilities

• Bridge Construction: fabricate bridge elements, read plans, and perform layout calculations.
• Bridge Maintenance: construct abutments, decks, and maintain large culverts.
• Environmental Protection: apply in-stream environmental protections.
• Equipment Operation: safely operate bridge maintenance equipment.
• Job Safety: enforce safety rules and wear PPE.
• Leadership: train crew and provide feedback; may supervise in emergencies.
• Manual labor: lead and perform on-site tasks.
• Preventive Maintenance: maintain equipment and perform pre-trip inspections.
• Traffic Control: manage signs and detours for safe work zones.
