Job summary

The position supports emergency operations such as temporary bridge placement, snow/ice removal, and debris clearance, plus environmental protection during tasks.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Ability to work at heights, in heavy traffic, over and in water and under other adverse conditions.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.

Responsibilities

• Construction Operations: Perform carpentry, welding and concrete finishing; remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures.
• Emergency Operations: Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures; operate equipment for snow/ice removal; provide traffic control.
• Environmental Protection: Apply in-stream and environmental protection measures during maintenance and construction.
• Equipment Operation: Operate light/medium-duty highway equipment for maintenance tasks.
• Job Safety: Enforce site protection, safety rules, PPE usage and OSHA/VDOT regulations.
• Manual Labor: Work as part of crew to complete projects on timber, steel, and concrete elements.
• Preventative Maintenance: Maintain equipment, perform pre-trip inspections, and transport personnel/equipment.
