Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers is seeking skilled workers to repair, maintain, and replace bridges and structures in accordance with VDOT standards. The role includes carpentry, welding, concrete finishing, and operating light to medium equipment, with emphasis on safety and regulatory compliance.

The candidate will perform emergency bridge operations, environmental protection, and regular preventative maintenance while collaborating with a crew to deliver projects on time and within safety

Qualifications

• Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.

Responsibilities

• Perform carpentry, welding and concrete finishing; remove or install structural components.
• Place temporary bridges and manage emergency operations; clear roadways of snow, debris, and provide traffic control.
• Apply environmental protection measures during all maintenance and construction activities.
• Operate light and medium‑duty highway equipment for maintenance tasks.
• Maintain safety at the worksite; follow OSHA, VOSHA and MUTCD guidelines; ensure PPE is used.
• Participate as a working crew member to complete projects and perform manual labor.
• Perform preventative maintenance and pre-trip inspections on equipment and tools.
