Roles & Responsibilities
Position Overview

The Interior Design Team Lead is responsible for overseeing a team of designers, ensuring the successful execution of design projects from concept to completion. This role combines creative direction with managerial duties, focusing on client satisfaction, design excellence, team development, and operational efficiency.

Core Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Team Management

  • Mentor, coach, and manage a team of interior designers, junior designers, and support staff.

  • Delegate tasks, manage workloads, and ensure balanced project distribution.

  • Conduct regular team meetings, reviews, and one‑on‑ones to provide feedback and foster professional growth.

  • Recruit, onboard, and train new team members as needed.

2. Project Leadership & Creative Direction

  • Act as the primary creative lead on key projects, setting the overall design vision and direction.

  • Oversee the entire project lifecycle: initial client consultation, concept development, space planning, material & FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures, Equipment) selection, and final installation.

  • Ensure all designs meet client requirements, budget constraints, timelines, and quality standards.

  • Review and approve all design presentations, drawings (concept, schematic, construction), and specifications before client submission.

3. Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as the main point of contact for high‑profile or complex clients.

  • Lead client presentations, effectively communicating design concepts and rationales.

  • Manage client expectations, negotiate changes, and resolve any significant issues or concerns.

  • Cultivate strong, long‑term client relationships and seek opportunities for repeat business or referrals.

4. Operational & Business Management

  • Collaborate with the Project Manager (or manage directly) to develop project schedules, budgets, and resource plans.

  • Monitor project financials, ensuring profitability and adherence to budgets.

  • Ensure the team follows company standards, design processes, and quality control protocols.

  • Contribute to business development efforts, including proposal writing, pitching for new projects, and developing marketing collateral.

5. Design Excellence & Innovation

  • Stay abreast of industry trends, new materials, technologies, and sustainable design practices.

  • Promote innovation, creativity, and technical excellence within the team.

  • Ensure all work complies with relevant building codes, regulations, and accessibility standards (e.g., ADA).

Key Skills & Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field. NCIDQ certification is highly preferred and often required.

  • Experience: 7+ years of professional interior design experience, with at least 2‑3 years in a supervisory or lead role. A strong portfolio showcasing a range of completed projects (residential, commercial, or specialized).

  • Technical Proficiency: Expert‑level skills in design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, 3D rendering software like Enscape or V‑Ray). Proficiency in project management tools.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Leadership & Mentorship: Inspiring leader who can motivate and develop talent.

    • Communication: Exceptional verbal, written, and visual presentation skills.

Typical Reporting Structure
  • Reports to: Director of Design, Principal, or Studio Head.

  • Direct Reports: Senior Designers, Interior Designers, Junior Designers, Design Assistants.

Work Environment
  • Primarily studio/office‑based with visits to client sites, showrooms, and project locations.

  • May require occasional travel depending on project locations.

  • Often involves working under tight deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
