Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Fellow position in the field of battery fire modelling and safety. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team working on advanced computational studies to improve the understanding of fire and thermal runaway hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries and next-generation energy storage systems.

The responsibility includes

  • Develop and implement computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fire dynamics models in OpenFOAM tool for battery thermal runaway and fire propagation.
  • Conduct numerical simulations to investigate ignition, flame spread, gas release, and jet/fire dynamics in battery systems.
  • Collaborate with experimental teams to validate models against laboratory-scale and large-scale fire tests.
  • Publish research outcomes in high-impact journals and present findings at international conferences.
  • Assist in project management, supervision of graduate students, and preparation of research proposals and reports.
Qualifications
  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Fire Safety Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in computational modelling, with experience in CFD (e.g., OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent, FDS, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of battery systems, thermal runaway, combustion, or fire science is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, C/C++, MATLAB) for model development and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
