About the Role
The Commercial Engineer (Bids & Tenders) plays a strategic and influential role in driving business growth by leading the full tendering cycle for complex data centre and M&E-related projects. This role is responsible for analysing client requirements, preparing competitive technical and commercial proposals, managing bid governance, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and ensuring each submission aligns with both client expectations and organisational strategy. The position blends engineering knowledge, commercial insight, and strong project coordination skills to convert opportunities into profitable contracts.
Responsibilities
- Stay updated on company health, safety, and environmental performance, ensuring these standards are communicated and integrated into tender submissions.
- Analyse RFQs, RFPs, and tender documents to identify winning strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Develop competitive bid strategies using market intelligence, technical expertise, and customer insights.
- Take ownership of assigned bids, ensuring early engagement with supply chain partners to meet submission timelines.
- Prepare high-quality proposals that comply with client specifications, internal governance, and industry regulations.
- Conduct detailed risk assessments and ensure mitigation plans are incorporated into bids.
- Produce detailed technical and commercial cost estimates, pricing models, and cash flow forecasts.
- Identify value engineering opportunities and cost‑saving measures to enhance competitiveness.
- Deliver superior service levels and identify unique selling points that differentiate the company.
- Participate in client clarification meetings, presentations, and negotiations.
- Build and maintain strong internal and external networks to support tendering success.
- Manage third‑party and supplier relationships to ensure cost‑effective and efficient support.
- Lead handover of secured bids, ensuring full transition of knowledge to project delivery teams.
- Support project teams as a subject‑matter expert to ensure client requirements, design intent, and supplier scopes are clearly understood.
Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering discipline, or Quantity Surveying.
- Experience in bid/tender management within construction, M&E, or data centre projects.
- Strong technical and commercial acumen.
- Proven ability to lead the full bid lifecycle from qualification to submission.
- Excellent organisational and multitasking skills to manage multiple deadlines and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated success managing complex B2B bids or RFP responses.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
- Self‑driven, motivated, and able to work independently or collaboratively within a team.
- Contributes to organisational strategy and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintains necessary professional qualifications and compliance.
- Strong command of English; additional languages are advantageous.
