A Singapore-based Single-Family Office is seeking a seasoned and strategic Chief Investment Officer (CIO) to build and lead its investment function. The Principal is focused on long-term wealth preservation, prudent growth, and establishing a strong investment governance framework from the ground up.
The CIO will oversee the family’s global portfolio, define and implement the Investment Policy Statement (IPS), design a multi-asset allocation framework, evaluate external managers and direct opportunities, and build all core investment processes and systems. This is a foundational role offering significant autonomy and strategic influence.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, recommend, and implement the Family Office’s Investment Policy Statement (IPS) and long-term investment strategy.
- Design and manage a balanced, endowment-style portfolio, aligned with the Principal’s objectives of wealth preservation with measured, steady alpha generation.
- Build and oversee a diversified, multi-asset portfolio across public markets, alternatives, private equity, and opportunistic direct deals.
- Conduct deep due diligence on fund managers and direct investment opportunities.
- Establish portfolio construction standards, rebalancing frameworks, and liquidity management processes.
Banking Relationships & Product Architecture
- Review, rationalize, and restructure existing private banking relationships.
- Select and onboard new banking partners where relevant, ensuring alignment on service, pricing, execution, and product architecture.
- Evaluate the product mix used across banks and platforms, ensuring suitability and quality of idea flow.
- Implement a disciplined risk management framework focused on capital preservation and controlled exposures.
- Utilize hedging tools where appropriate across FX, interest rates, and equities.
- Perform stress tests, scenario analysis, and performance attribution.
Market Research & Investment Insights
- Maintain strong insight into global macro trends, monetary policy, geopolitical risks, and key market drivers affecting the portfolio.
- Provide forward-looking investment insights and strategic recommendations to the Principal and Investment Committee.
Operations, Governance & Leadership
- Act as a key member of the Investment Committee, supporting investment governance and decision-making.
- Build and lead a small but high-caliber internal investment team (initially one direct report, with scope to expand).
- Set up the investment function from a clean slate, establishing policies, systems, reporting structures, risk processes, and data tools.
- Manage external managers, custodians, advisors, and other ecosystem partners.
- Ensure regulatory compliance and proper documentation across all investment activities.
Qualifications & Experience
Background
- 10–12+ years of progressive experience in investment management, ideally in a Family Office, endowment, sovereign entity, or institutional multi-asset environment.
- Strong exposure to portfolio construction, manager selection, and asset allocation.
- Experience designing investment frameworks, especially in a context with fresh capital and a new structure.
Technical & Market Expertise
- Deep understanding of global public markets, alternatives, and multi-asset strategies.
- Strong grasp of risk management, performance measurement, and analytical tools.
- Ability to evaluate both direct and fund investments.
Soft Skills & Personal Attributes
- High integrity, discretion, and maturity in handling confidential information.
- Ability to communicate complex investment concepts clearly to a non-technical Principal.
- Entrepreneurial mindset: capable of building processes, teams, and systems from scratch.
- Collaborative and able to work closely with the Principal in a low-ego environment.
