Job description

In charge of overall operations - The incumbent is in overall charge of operations, including vessel operation for owned tonnage vessels and cargo transportation operations. The incumbent will be liaising with charterers (including Japanese charterers) on all operation matters. The incumbent will supervise both operation lines and guide the subordinates whenever necessary to ensure efficient and smooth day-to-day operation. Responsible for managing vessel and cargo operations to optimize company’s benefit/profit.

Team management - responsible for overall operation team management including not only ensuring operational performance but also deployment and development of subordinates such as providing proper guidance to team members, arranging efficient allocation of workforce, streamlining operational workflow (improving team efficiency), strengthening team abilities by education and/or sharing knowhow etc, and motivating members.

Coordination - expected to work closely and liaise with other departments, especially with commercial, marine and technical in terms of vessel operation for owned vessels and with chartering in terms of cargo transportation operation. Being responsible for timely and accurate reporting to heads of each business segment (DBGM as head of ship management business and ABGM as head of ship operator business), he/she is expected to provide necessary support for decision making. He/she is also expected to face and coordinate with external parties such as charterers, head owners, ship managers, insurers, etc. It is required that he/she can responsibly communicate and negotiate with counterparties when issues arise.

Key Role and Responsibilities

  1. Provide guidance to subordinates (managers) when they face difficulties in handling day-to-day Vessel operations/Post fixtures matters.
  2. As a supervisor of all the operations in the team, monitor vessel position and performance, charterers voyage instructions as per Owners CP. Ensure vessels performance are in compliance with the CP conditions, liaise with relevant internal/external parties (including Japanese Charterers) and create rectification if improvement is required.
  3. Liaise with Marine, Technical Department and Deputy Branch General Manager in preparing for charters and ascertaining on-going operational requirements and actions in preparing for new nautical operations and make the decision within certain delegation for the safety operation of the vessels.
  4. Provide weekly and monthly updates for all the vessels’ operational status to the Management
  5. Negotiate and draw out the Charter Party drafts for all owned vessels. Advise and guide Commercial department on fixtures and pre-Fixture Operations. Supervise and manage the complete Post Fixture Operations of the MCSS managing vessels. Defend & negotiate claims coming from the charterers’ view the CP and operation of the vessels
  6. Keep abreast of the latest maritime law, developments and regulations (such as EU-ETS/Fuel EU) in the maritime industry and ascertain how new regulations would affect vessel operations. Conduct related communication with charterers and reflect necessary revision in CP whenever appropriate, and give guidance to Vessel operators
  7. Being conscious of improving teams’ performance and sustainability by reviewing work flow efficiency, manpower allocation, and sharing knowledge
  8. Provide training, mentoring and education to subordinates to support their growth and team’s growth

Job Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • At least 10 years’ experience with shipping companies, preferably with Ship owners/Operator and for dry bulk carriers
  • Knowledge of nautical operation and charter party
  • Basic understanding of Insurance and claim handling with charterers.
  • Experience in leading a team or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in Japanese language is required as the incumbent needs to liaise closely with Japanese charterers on day-to-day matters
