Role Context

The Structural Steel Inspector will provide independent quality verification across fabrication yards and active construction areas, working closely with structural engineers, Quality teams, contractors, consultants, third-party inspectors, and fabrication specialists. The position is responsible for identifying non-conforming work before it progresses, maintaining material and welding traceability, confirming dimensional tolerances, and ensuring installed steelwork meets project acceptance criteria. Effective inspection at each stage will help prevent costly rework, protect structural integrity, and support smooth handover of completed works.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect structural steel fabrication, assembly, erection, and installation activities against approved drawings, project specifications, ITPs, and Method Statements.
• Review shop drawings, erection drawings, fabrication details, material specifications, and approved technical submissions before inspection activities.
• Carry out inspections at fabrication workshops, storage areas, pre-shipment locations, and construction sites as required.
• Verify structural steel materials against approved submittals and confirm correct grades, dimensions, thicknesses, heat numbers, and identification markings.
• Examine Material Test Certificates, Mill Certificates, Certificates of Conformity, and supporting material documentation for compliance and traceability.
• Monitor cutting, drilling, forming, fit-up, assembly, preparation, and fabrication processes for conformance with approved requirements.
• Inspect welding activities and confirm compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications and applicable project standards.
• Verify welder qualifications and ensure welding work is performed only by suitably approved personnel.
• Check joint preparation, alignment, fit-up, preheating requirements, welding parameters, and post-weld conditions.
• Coordinate and witness Non-Destructive Testing activities including UT, MT, PT, RT, and visual testing where specified.
• Review NDT reports and verify that identified indications comply with applicable acceptance criteria.
• Inspect structural bolted connections for correct bolt type, grade, diameter, installation method, tightening, torque, and tension requirements.
• Confirm proper installation of high-strength bolts, washers, nuts, and associated connection components.
• Perform dimensional inspections of fabricated members, assemblies, and erected structural steel.
• Check alignment, plumbness, levels, elevations, connection geometry, tolerances, and final positioning against approved drawings.
• Verify anchor bolts, base plates, embedded items, grout interfaces, and steel-to-concrete connections before and after erection.
• Inspect surface preparation processes including cleaning, blasting, and substrate preparation prior to coating.
• Verify approved coating systems, environmental application conditions, Dry Film Thickness requirements, and coating inspection records.
• Inspect fireproofing and structural fire protection applications where included in the project scope.
• Monitor steel erection activities from a quality perspective and verify temporary stability provisions and approved erection sequences are maintained.
• Review lifting and erection operations where they interface with structural quality and installation requirements.
• Coordinate with Structural Engineers on field modifications, deviations, technical clarifications, and acceptance requirements.
• Raise and follow up Non-Conformance Reports, Site Inspection Requests, observations, and quality-related findings where necessary.
• Verify implementation of corrective actions and confirm satisfactory closure before affected works proceed.
• Prepare accurate inspection reports, checklists, photographs, material records, and supporting quality documentation.
• Maintain complete traceability records for structural materials, welding activities, inspection stages, and final acceptance.
• Witness specified hold points and witness points in accordance with approved Inspection and Test Plans.
• Review contractor quality records to ensure required inspection documentation is complete, accurate, and retrievable.
• Participate in fabrication release inspections, pre-shipment inspections, receiving inspections, site acceptance inspections, and final inspections.
• Verify steelwork against applicable AISC, AWS, ASTM, ASME, BS, EN, ISO, and project-specific requirements where relevant.
• Support internal and external quality audits by providing objective inspection evidence and technical records.
• Monitor structural steel punch-list items and verify completion before final acceptance.
• Assist with preparation of welding dossiers, NDT packages, coating records, as-built information, inspection files, and final handover documentation.
• Coordinate with commissioning and handover teams where structural steel interfaces with mechanical, electrical, architectural, or specialist systems.
• Identify potential fabrication or installation defects early and recommend corrective measures to reduce rework.
• Promote consistent quality awareness among fabrication teams, site personnel, contractors, and subcontractors.

Ideal Profile

• Bachelor 's degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in structural steel inspection, fabrication, erection, construction quality control, or related works.
• Previous involvement in airport, infrastructure, industrial, commercial, or other large-scale construction projects.
• Strong practical knowledge of structural steel fabrication, welding, bolting, erection, dimensional inspection, coating, and material traceability.
• Experience coordinating with steel fabricators, contractors, consultants, engineering teams, and third-party inspection agencies.
• Good ability to interpret structural drawings, fabrication details, specifications, ITPs, welding procedures, and inspection documentation.
• AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification is highly preferred.
• CSWIP Welding Inspector certification would be advantageous.
• NDT qualifications covering UT, MT, PT, or RT are beneficial.
• NACE or AMPP Coating Inspector certification is an advantage for projects involving protective coating systems.
• ISO 9001 Internal Auditor or related Quality certification is preferred.
