Role Context
The Roads Design Engineer will provide technical review and design support across highway, junction, and interchange packages within a major PMO. The role will focus on ensuring that road geometry, pavement concepts, safety provisions, drainage interfaces, utility constraints, structures, and traffic requirements are coordinated into practical and compliant solutions. By combining detailed design knowledge with PMO-level oversight, the position will help the Client identify design risks early, evaluate alternatives, improve constructability, and make informed technical decisions before construction commitments are made.
Key Responsibilities
- Review concept and detailed road design drawings, specifications, reports, and supporting calculations prepared by third-party consultants.
- Evaluate highway layouts with particular attention to geometric design, safety, constructability, and multidisciplinary interfaces.
- Review horizontal and vertical alignments, cross-sections, junction layouts, and interchange arrangements.
- Assess interfaces between roads, bridges, drainage systems, utilities, traffic infrastructure, landscape, and adjacent development.
- Develop conceptual road, junction, and interchange options to support PMO and Client decision-making.
- Prepare high-level geometric solutions and compare alternative layouts against technical, operational, and project requirements.
- Contribute to value engineering studies for highway and interchange packages.
- Identify opportunities to optimize road geometry, pavement solutions, safety measures, and construction efficiency.
- Prepare engineering sketches, exhibits, markups, and technical details to explain proposed design solutions.
- Review pavement design proposals and assess their suitability against anticipated loading, project requirements, and applicable standards.
- Review road safety provisions and challenge third-party recommendations where improvement is required.
- Assess design submissions for compliance with relevant local and international highway standards.
- Review supplier drawings and technical documentation associated with road infrastructure packages.
- Prepare clear, coordinated, and technically defensible review comments for PMO and Client approval processes.
- Track responses to review comments and verify satisfactory technical closeout.
- Coordinate with bridges, structures, drainage, utilities, traffic, landscape, and architectural teams to resolve design conflicts.
- Participate in multidisciplinary design coordination meetings and technical workshops.
- Support resolution of interface issues affecting roadway geometry, access, utilities, structures, or construction sequencing.
- Evaluate constructability constraints associated with major road and interchange schemes.
- Assess phasing requirements and identify design conditions that may complicate temporary traffic arrangements or staged construction.
- Contribute to design risk reviews and recommend practical mitigation measures.
- Participate in formal design review workshops and value engineering sessions.
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations on road geometry, interchange options, design risks, and proposed solutions.
- Explain complex road design matters clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Use road design software to test concepts and prepare supporting technical information.
- Support PMO technical governance by maintaining clear records of design issues, decisions, reviews, and recommendations.
- Provide proactive engineering input to help improve overall project delivery and design coordination.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor 's degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in road and highway design.
- Strong background in major highways, junctions, interchanges, and associated infrastructure.
- Proven experience in geometric road design covering horizontal alignments, vertical profiles, cross-sections, and junction layouts.
- Strong understanding of applicable local and international highway design standards.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing third-party consultant designs and preparing structured technical comments.
- Practical knowledge of pavement design principles and road safety engineering.
- Experience evaluating and refining third-party pavement and safety proposals.
- Background in concept development and value engineering for road infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of constructability and multidisciplinary design interfaces.
- Experience coordinating with structural, drainage, utility, traffic, and landscape disciplines.
- Ability to identify design risks and develop practical engineering solutions.
- Previous consultancy, PMC, or PMO experience is advantageous.
- Experience participating in design review workshops and technical coordination meetings is highly desirable.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, InRoads, or equivalent highway design software is advantageous.
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional recognition is desirable.
- Strong technical presentation and communication capability.
- Proactive approach to design coordination and problem resolution.
