Role Context The Lifting Specialist provides the technical and field controls needed to execute routine, heavy, complex, and critical lifting operations safely. The position connects engineering calculations and lift planning with actual site conditions, ensuring crane capacity, rigging configuration, load characteristics, ground bearing capacity, access, weather, and surrounding construction interfaces are understood before a lift begins. This specialist has direct authority to challenge unsafe arrangements and suspend operations when site conditions depart from approved plans.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, and supervise crane, lifting, and rigging activities across active construction areas.
• Develop and review lifting plans, critical lift plans, rigging studies, Method Statements, Job Safety Analyses, and risk assessments.
• Select appropriate cranes and lifting arrangements based on load characteristics, working radius, required capacity, access, and site constraints.
• Review crane load charts, boom configurations, lifting radii, operational limits, and capacity utilization before approving proposed operations.
• Confirm load weight, dimensions, center of gravity, lifting points, orientation, and handling requirements.
• Engineer practical arrangements for heavy, oversized, unusual, tandem, and other complex lifting operations.
• Assess crane positioning, access routes, working areas, outrigger locations, crane mats, and ground bearing requirements.
• Consider underground utilities, pavement capacity, excavations, structures, and other conditions that could affect crane stability.
• Verify cranes and lifting equipment are appropriate, inspected, certified, and fit for the planned operation.
• Inspect slings, shackles, chains, hooks, lifting beams, spreader beams, and other rigging accessories before use.
• Maintain oversight of equipment certification, inspection status, test documentation, and lifting registers.
• Conduct pre-lift inspections and confirm personnel, equipment, exclusion zones, permits, communications, and site conditions are ready.
• Supervise critical lifting operations and verify continuous compliance with the approved lift plan.
• Coordinate Crane Operators, Riggers, Banksmen, Signalmen, Supervisors, and construction personnel during execution.
• Establish clear signaling and communication arrangements before lifting activities commence.
• Monitor wind, weather, visibility, ground stability, access conditions, and other environmental factors that can influence lifting safety.
• Stop or suspend a lifting operation where unsafe conditions, equipment problems, communication failures, or deviations from the approved plan are identified.
• Verify compliance with Permit-to-Work controls, Method Statements, risk assessments, project procedures, and HSE requirements.
• Provide specialist advice to construction teams on rigging techniques, crane operations, load handling, and lifting risk controls.
• Review subcontractor lifting plans and challenge inadequate calculations, configurations, controls, or supporting documentation.
• Monitor lifting subcontractor performance and compliance during field operations.
• Participate in lifting audits, toolbox talks, inspections, safety briefings, and workforce awareness activities.
• Support investigations into lifting incidents, near misses, dropped-object risks, equipment failures, and unsafe practices.
• Coordinate lifting schedules with logistics, temporary works, construction sequencing, access management, and surrounding site operations.
• Prevent crane and lifting activities from creating conflicts with adjacent construction or critical project interfaces.
• Provide specialist lifting support for installation of mechanical, electrical, MEP, structural, and infrastructure equipment.
• Plan and oversee lifting of chillers, AHUs, generators, transformers, pumps, tanks, structural steel, and other major plant.
• Support heavy equipment installation associated with district cooling plants and other utility facilities.
• Coordinate crane activities within congested construction areas, restricted-access locations, and operational airport environments.
• Plan lifting around existing infrastructure and live facilities while respecting operational restrictions and exclusion requirements.
• Support emergency response, load recovery, and contingency planning for complex lifting activities.
• Maintain lift plans, permits, inspection certificates, equipment registers, pre-lift checklists, toolbox records, and post-lift documentation.

Ideal Profile

A Bachelor 's Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction, or another relevant technical discipline is preferred, together with at least 5 years of practical experience in lifting, rigging, crane operations, or construction lifting supervision. Candidates should have hands-on experience planning and supervising lifts on major construction, infrastructure, industrial, or airport developments. Strong knowledge of mobile and crawler cranes, rigging equipment, lifting accessories, crane load charts, lifting radii, boom configurations, ground conditions, and safe operating limitations is essential. The successful specialist should be confident preparing and reviewing critical lift studies and capable of identifying unsafe assumptions before equipment is mobilized. Experience with heavy equipment installation, tandem lifting, restricted-access operations, or unusual load configurations is highly desirable. A recognized lifting or rigging qualification such as LEEA, CPCS, OPITO, or an equivalent certification is preferred. Strong knowledge of construction HSE requirements and recognized lifting industry practices is also expected.
