Job summary

American Express Global Business Travel is seeking a Programmer to build and enhance Java-based solutions within our application platform. The role emphasizes hands-on development, agile teamwork, and delivering robust software in a modern DevOps/cloud setting.

The candidate will work with Java, REST/SOAP APIs, XML/JSON, and XSLT, while deploying in containerized environments such as Docker/OpenShift and using CI tools like Maven, GitHub, and Jenkins.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software development experience with Java and related technologies.
• Expert-level hands-on Java programming skills and Spring knowledge.
• Proficiency in designing and consuming SOAP/REST APIs (XML/JSON).
• Experience with XSLT processing of XML documents is a plus.
• Knowledge of distributed, multi-tier systems and CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Participate in agile or rapid development teams to deliver robust Java-based solutions.
• Develop and maintain web services (REST/SOAP), XML, and related data formats.
• Contribute to deployment/automation in cloud/DevOps environments.

This Programmer role is focused on hands‑on software development to enhance and build new capabilities in our application platform and services developed using Java & related technologies. This position requires active participation in agile or other rapid development teams, with a primary emphasis on writing, maintaining, and improving robust, high‑quality Java‑based solutions. The candidate will work extensively with web services, XML/XSLT, and integration technologies, as well as participate in the deployment and automation of solutions in modern DevOps/cloud environments.

What You’ll Do

• Agile or other rapid application development methods
• Object‑oriented design and coding skills across a variety of platforms (JAVA, SOA/Web Services, SOAP, REST API, XML, JSON)
• Experience in working with various GDS APIs in travel industry is an added advantage.
• Hands on experience in XSLT programming for processing & transforming XML documents.
• Knowledge of distributed (multi‑tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational/XML/NoSQL databases
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Possess a deep understanding of multi‑threaded & asynchronous programming concepts
• Must be proficient in Continuous Integration Continuous Development environment with knowledge of Maven, GitHub, Jenkins, Nexus and similar CI tools.
• Must have good knowledge of Unix/Linux commands, various application servers like Apache Tomcat, Docker containers, ROSA/OpenShift environment
• Prior experience in leading a small group of programmers and guiding them in developing software solutions will be an added advantage.

What We’re Looking For

• 5+ years of software development experience relevant to the listed technologies/tools.
• Expert‑level hands on Java programming skills.
• Spring frameworks knowledge is a must.
• Proficiency in XSLT for processing and transforming XML documents.
• Strong background in object‑oriented design and coding using Java, SOA/Web Services, SOAP, REST APIs, XML, and JSON.
• Knowledge of designing and building distributed (multi‑tiered) systems that process high concurrency API calls.

Preferred (Good to Have) Qualifications

• Experience working with GDS [Global Distribution Systems] APIs associated with the travel industry.
• Experience with automation and integrations with observability platforms.
• Hands‑on knowledge of deployment in ROSA/PaaS or similar cloud/container environments.
• Familiarity with the technologies and operational environment of the travel industry
