The Custody practitioner role will be part of a team of practitioners and support workers who work across police custodies in Sussex. The successful candidate will be based in Crawley but may work from other police custody sites.

• Provide compassion to vulnerable individuals at points of acute vulnerability in the criminal justice process.
• Support criminal justice agencies to better identify vulnerabilities in their environments.
• Advise on pathways to access further support and secure referrals into mainstream health and social care services and other relevant interventions from statutory and voluntary providers.
• Complete screening and management of service user need through initial information gathering and face-to-face screening, demonstrating safe clinical decision making and seeking support from the H&J practitioner as indicated.
• Screen individuals through relevant health databases in consultation with other service providers; identify the need for involvement of the HCP and H&J Practitioner; identify levels of risk and urgency; review documentation and databases to determine needs and next steps.
• Initiate referrals and signposting to external agencies, ensuring individuals are referred to the appropriate professionals for specific treatments, advice, or support.
• Work within limitations and escalate to H&J practitioner as appropriate; seek support and guidance when necessary.
• Collaborate with Custody Health Care Professionals and community agencies; maintain effective communication across health, social care and criminal justice sectors.
• Maintain dignity and respect of individuals; ensure information is recorded accurately and sensitively for use by criminal justice agencies.
• Promote effective communication with people who are troubled or distressed; work across teams and boundaries to deliver integrated services; maintain ongoing liaison with carers and professionals as required.
• Actively seek supervision to maintain safe practice and robust decision making.

• Flexible and adaptable with the ability to work in challenging environments.
• Compassionate approach and good understanding of risk management and assessing a range of vulnerabilities; able to identify needs and provide or arrange appropriate support.
• A willingness to participate in necessary training and development; able to follow direction and seek support when required.
