Job Summary

Would you like to specialise while still enjoying the breadth of experiences that a tertiary centre offers? Our Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, welcomes a fixed‑term Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to support our Head, Neck Cancer, specialist surgery and neuro outpatients units for a 10‑month, rotational role.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work as part of a highly skilled, collaborative team led by a Clinical Lead, a Professional Lead and a Consultant SLT. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessing and managing patients with swallowing and communication disorders.
  • Developing, auditing, and improving service delivery.
  • Training junior colleagues and students.
  • Utilising specialist assessments such as FEES, tracheostomy, videofluoroscopy.
  • Working flexibly and thriving in a fast‑paced environment.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Professional knowledge at degree level in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Postgraduate training/short courses relevant to adults with acquired communication/swallowing difficulties.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Completed RCSLT Level C / EDS Level 5 dysphagia competencies (or higher).
  • Completed RCSLT NQP competencies.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience working within an adult inpatient setting.
  • Experience working independently with an adult dysphagia caseload.
  • Experience successfully contributing to a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience working with the speciality caseload and holding own clinical caseload.
  • Strong communication skills, time‑management, organisational ability and ICT competence.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team, including weekends as required.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Advanced competencies such as tracheostomy, FEES or videofluoroscopy.
  • Membership of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network (CEN).
  • Experience supervising or training junior colleagues.
  • Experience within the NHS.
  • Bilingual ability or communication in more than one language.
