Key Responsibilities

Business Partnering & Transformation

  • Act as a trusted partner to leaders and managers, providing coaching and counsel on complex ER and IR issues to improve people management capabilities and minimise risk.
  • Lead people-focused change management initiatives, including organisational restructures, transfers, and other business transformation programmes, ensuring a fair and legally compliant approach.
  • Use data and insights to identify ER/IR trends, recommending proactive strategies and interventions to enhance employee engagement, performance, and overall workplace culture.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for trade union representatives, fostering constructive relationships through regular consultation and negotiation on matters such as pay reviews and terms and conditions.
  • Manage all industrial relations activities, including negotiations, consultations, and dispute resolution, to ensure business continuity and maintain a positive working climate.
  • Provide expert guidance to the business on collective bargaining agreements and the interpretation and application of industrial relations policies.
  • Navigate complex, heavily unionised environments, demonstrating strong negotiation, mediation, and relationship management skills.

Employee Relations Casework & Advisory

  • Conduct and oversee workplace investigations into complex allegations, producing comprehensive reports and advising on appropriate resolutions.
  • Provide training and coaching to managers and People & Culture colleagues to upskill them in handling ER issues consistently and effectively.
  • Lead the response to Employment Tribunal claims and litigation processes in partnership with legal teams, gathering evidence, preparing documentation, and managing external counsel.

Project Management

  • Lead on and project manage ER/IR initiatives, defining project scopes, timelines, and deliverables. This includes developing and embedding new policies, processes, and tools.
  • Apply project management methodologies to People projects, ensuring effective stakeholder engagement, risk management, and communication plans. Efficiently model and utilise data to inform recommendations.
  • Work cross-functionally with People & Culture colleagues and business stakeholders to drive the successful delivery of projects.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Significant experience as an Employee Relations or Industrial Relations professional within a complex, multi-site, and ideally unionised UK, NI & ROI environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading or supporting large-scale People or business transformation projects.
  • A proven track record of successful business partnering, with the ability to influence and build credibility with senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple work streams and deliver projects on time and to budget.
  • In-depth, up-to-date knowledge of UK, NI & ROI employment law and its practical application.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • CIPD Level 5 qualification or higher, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Adept at using digital platforms and tools to analyse trends, generate insights, and support data-driven decision-making.

Key Attributes

  • Resilience and Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and challenging environment, managing competing priorities effectively.
