Forest Ranger

SevernTrentLife
Coventry
GBP 25,000 - 33,000
Job description

Hello, we’re Severn Trent and we think water is wonderful. Oh, we’re pretty keen on people too.

24 hours a day, 365 days a year we serve 4.8 million households and business across the heart of the UK. Each cuppa drank and every toilet flushed is only possible because of the 6,500 brilliant team members working across our patch.

We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality. We know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our customers and the communities where they live.

If you want to do more because you care, we’d love to talk to you. There really is something for everyone here.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Our Water Quality and Environment team have an opportunity for you to join as our new Forest Ranger. To be considered for this role you have to live in the West Midlands area.

In your new role, you’ll be directly responsible for our 74 Tiny Forests and growing number of Commonwealth Games Legacy Forest sites. You will also work on existing woodland sites as required. You will work with our existing Forest Ranger to help the team grow and shape Severn Trent Waters’ new and existing woodland sites. You will be responsible for general forest management, contract supervision support and carrying out a range of key surveys including re-stock and deer impact assessments; stocking density assessments; dangerous tree surveys; post-planting site checks; and minor maintenance works.

You will agree works plans, liaise with partners and contractors, and make sure that project goals and annual targets are met. Your role will involve managing contracts to deliver our legacy forest commitments whilst adhering to all relevant guidance and legislation.

The role will require you to travel regularly to woodland sites throughout the Severn Trent region. Your primary work area will be throughout the West Midlands with a focus on the area between Shrewsbury, Coventry and Worcester. Please consider this carefully when applying for the role.

Some of your other key accountabilities will include:

  • Work with the Forestry Team to e nsure UKFS compliant forestry practices are maintained
  • Ensure site infrastructure is checked regularly to maintain health and safety standards (e.g., footpaths, fencing, gates, signage, deer high seats)
  • Carry out the required surveys of the Legacy Forests to inform establishment and management planning
  • Carry out key surveys of existing woodlands to inform their management planning
  • Establish our re-stocking requirements
  • Monitor contractors and sub-contractors during tree planting and maintenance works as required by the Assistant Forestry Manager
  • Be responsible for recording information gathered and reporting to managers, using software such as outlook, excel and word
  • Lead volunteer groups as required to carry out small scale management / maintenance work
  • Be comfortable and capable of working alone for a large proportion of the time
  • Be flexible and prepared to change plans at short notice if required

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

In order to succeed in your new role, you will need practical experience in land management, forestry, or conservation work, along with a strong understanding of tree care. Confidence in liaising with customers and partners, as well as engaging with the public, is essential. You should also have sound knowledge and experience in site-based health and safety management. A chainsaw certification with recent hands-on use—or a willingness to obtain one—is required. Additionally, experience working with contractors and supervising practical site-based activities, particularly those involving volunteers, would be highly desirable.

As frequent travel is expected, a full driving licence will be required.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU

Working here isn’t just a job. You can build a career at Severn Trent, and we’ll reward you for it too. We have a range of benefits that recognise great work, and award-winning training to help you reach your potential. And we’ll also help you play your part in looking after the environment and the communities where we live.

With that in mind, here are just some of the perks that you’ll get being part of the Seven Trent family:

• 25 days holiday + bank holidays (and the ability to buy/ sell up to 5 days per year)
• Annual bonus scheme (based on company performance)
• Leading pension scheme – we will double your contribution (up to 15% when you contribute 7.5%)
• Sharesave – the chance to buy Severn Trent Plc shares at a discounted rate
• Dedicated training and development with our ‘Academy’
• Electric vehicle scheme and retail offers
• Family friendly policies including, a year fully paid maternity and adoption leave
• Two volunteering days per year

WHATS NEXT?

We can’t wait to hear from you.

Before you apply, you’ll need an updated copy of your CV and about five minutes to spare

And if your curiosity has peaked and you're wanting to find out even more, search #LifeAtSevernTrent on social media.

Ps. we’ll always let you know the outcome of your application after the closing date - so keep an eye on your phone and emails.
