Job description
Overview

Severn Trent is delivering a £415m project to replace 870 miles of old water pipes across the Midlands. This major investment aims to improve water quality, reduce leaks, and make water supply more reliable for millions of people. The new pipes will last up to 100 years.

We are creating new roles across the region with positions based in Birmingham, Nottingham, or anywhere in between. We have opportunities to help shape the future of water in the Midlands.

Role

We are looking for a Network Construction Engineer to work as part of a team to successfully deliver Mains Renewal construction activity for a specific site within one of the four regions (North, South, East and West).

Responsibilities

Everyday responsibilities

  • Operate assets on the network on behalf of the construction team while carrying out large-scale Mains Renewal work at specific locations.
  • Assist and support the Network Construction Manager in scoping and delivering Mains Renewal schemes within their area of accountability; work alongside the Lead Operative to deliver on-site activity.
  • Undertake significant construction activity on-site, including excavation, installation, testing, and commissioning of new mains and assets.
  • Deliver construction work to a set budget, working with the Network Control Manager.

Key accountability

  • Undertake pre-site checks with the Network Construction Manager and identify key assets for risk and contingency documentation; conduct detailed surveys on DMA renewal options.
  • liaise and communicate with Network Control at critical stages of each scheme; support the Network Construction Lead Operative and Operatives during construction stages (fusing pipes, service laying, over-landing, etc.).
  • Perform valving due diligence for critical stages; chlorination and sampling of mains and services in line with relevant SOPs and SSOW (Safe Systems of Work).
  • Carry out on-site operational activities such as flushing and cleansing of water mains and hydrants; oversee installation of pressure control valves; manage pressure, flow and disinfection for both low- and high-risk valve operations.
What you’ll bring to the role

The right candidate will have a full driving license and ideally National Water Hygiene and NRSWA qualifications, with significant experience in a utility-based industry.

You’ll need good communication skills and the ability to build successful working relationships as you work as part of a team. You will have exposure in identifying risks and opportunities.

The right character, positivity, and caring attitude are also important.
