Job summary

Waste Porter

Waste Porters are responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely collection, transportation, and disposal of both clinical and non-clinical waste, ensuring full compliance with Trust waste management policies and procedures.

The position operates on a shift pattern that may include evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, with service hours running from 06:00 to 22:00, 365 days a year.

The role involves working in all weather conditions and requires the operation of electric tow trucks as part of daily duties. The Trust will provide full personal protective equipment (PPE) and necessary training to ensure safety and compliance.

Main duties of the job
  • Responsible for the collection of all waste from Hospital wards and departments.
  • Ensure and promote correct segregation of waste.
  • Operate general waste and dry mix compactors.
  • Collect all full sharps containers and supply wards with replacements.
  • Prepare all sharps transporters ready for contractor collection.
  • To ensure all full clinical waste bins are exchanged for clean and lockable empty bins.
  • Ensure clean and dirty waste compounds are secure and have appropriately stored waste bins.
  • Tag all clinical waste bins according to waste stream.
  • Operate an electric tow truck and handheld tow machine around the hospital corridors.
  • Collect all soiled linen from the Hospital Wards and Departments
  • Assess and dispose of any large or one of hospital items as required.
  • Maintain a clean environment around the waste compactor, linen area and skips.
  • Report any spills, leaks or incidents.
  • Adhere to all health and safety risk assessments, confidentiality regulations and with all local Trust policies.
  • To be compliant on all mandatory training
  • Any other duties, which may be requested by the Facilities Management team.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • Four GCSEs, or equivalent, grade 3-4 / D, or above, including Maths and English
  • Full UK driving licence
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience and/or knowledge of waste handling or portering duties
  • Understanding of waste segregation
  • Driving experience - cars, small vans, warehouse vehicles etc
  • Experience of warehousing operations such as collections and deliveries
