Trading Standards Officer – Illegal Tobacco & Vape Enforcement

Rate: Flexible hourly rate, Inside IR35

Working Pattern: Hybrid – Thursdays in the office, onsite inspections as required, remainder of the week working from home

Contract Duration: Until 31st March 2026

Location: East Midlands

Our client is seeking a motivated and experienced Trading Standards Officer to join their specialist enforcement team, focusing on illegal tobacco and non-compliant vaping products. This role plays a vital part in safeguarding communities, reducing harm, and tackling criminal supply chains.

In this role, you will:

  • Investigate and prosecute offences involving illicit tobacco and vaping products
  • Conduct inspections of retail premises and seize illegal or non-compliant goods
  • Work collaboratively with partners such as HMRC, Police, and Public Health teams
  • Gather intelligence and support local, regional, and national enforcement campaigns
  • Provide clear and authoritative compliance advice to businesses and the public

You will bring:

  • Strong understanding of Trading Standards legislation, particularly around tobacco control and vaping products
  • Excellent investigative, analytical, and evidential skills
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team
  • Confident communication skills and experience of enforcement and prosecution processes
  • A commitment to service improvement and professional excellence
Essential Skills & Qualifications
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical and legal information
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Diploma in Trading Standards, Consumer Affairs, Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards, or equivalent
  • Good working knowledge across a range of Trading Standards functions
  • Significant experience across relevant Trading Standards legislation, including:
    • Conducting investigations and enquiries
    • Producing clear, evidence-based reports
    • Providing advice to businesses, consumers, and partner agencies
    • Working in an intelligence-led, priority-driven environment
    • Liaising with enforcement agencies
    • Supporting Home and Primary Authority work
