Engine by Starling is seeking a Staff Infrastructure Engineer to design, build and run the cloud foundations our banking platform runs on—across regions and providers globally. You’ll craft observable, reliable, and secure systems that power the wider engineering organisation and enhance automation across the stack.

Engine by Starling engineers deliver new features across diverse stacks, while maintaining a culture of ownership, documentation, and collaboration. Hybrid work supported.

Qualifications

• Proven multi-region GCP disaster recovery experience.
• Bootstrapping Google Cloud Organisations and policy hardening.
• Experience with GCP services: GKE, Compute Engine, IAM, VPC Service Controls.
• Terraform code written in a modular, clean style.
• Experience with containers, distributed systems, immutable infrastructure.
• Key and secret management in GCP including cryptographic key ceremonies.
• Designing hybrid connectivity between GCP and on-premise or HSMs.
• Workload Identity Federation for keyless auth in CI/CD.
• Observability tooling: Cloud Monitoring/Logging, OpenTelemetry, Grafana.
• CI/CD automation and scripting (Python/Go).
• RESTful API and event-driven concepts; RFC/ADR writing.

Responsibilities

• Design, document, build and maintain scalable infrastructure on GCP.
• Ensure performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness of cloud environments.
• Lead complex infrastructure projects from inception to production.
• Write clear technical documentation and runbooks; host training sessions.
• Lead by example and raise the technical bar across the team.
• Maintain security by design and compliance with standards (ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS, 3DS).
• Develop and operate key/secret management with Cloud KMS and EKM.
