Job overview

The Trust seeks to appoint a Speciality Doctor in Critical Care. This is a 1‑year fixed‑term post requiring suitable experience within Critical Care. The appointee will share the caseload, facilities and trainee support with the existing Speciality Doctors.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a high‑quality, responsive critical care service to Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals, caring for patients on the ITUs and HDUs at Queen’s Hospital and/or King George Hospital, reviewing patients and initiating critical care treatment in Accident & Emergency, theatre recovery and ward areas, and undertaking transfer of patients (both intra‑ and inter‑hospital).
  • Comply with the agreed job plan, to be reviewed annually.
  • Participate in an emergency out‑of‑hours resident on‑call cover for critical care medicine.
  • Contribute to postgraduate and continuing education for medical, nursing, technical staff, GP’s and other allied professions.
  • Deputise in the absence of departmental colleagues in cases of annual leave and (where practicable) short‑term sickness.

Our workforce is diverse and we deliver services from two main sites – King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford – with additional outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic and Harold Wood Polyclinic.

Person specification

Essential criteria

  • 3 years of ITU experience (at least 1 year in a UK hospital).
  • At least 1 referee who is an UK ITU consultant.
  • Fully GMC registered with a licence to practise.
  • Ability to perform rapid sequence intubation without supervision in both adults and children.

Desirable criteria

  • ATLS or PALS course.
  • Any of the following exams: FICM, EDICM, FRCA, MRCP.
  • Critical‑care ultrasound or echo‑cardiography skills.
