Job Title: Specialist Biomedical Scientist, Haematology and Blood Transfusion
Location: Basildon, Essex (flexible to work at Southend and Basildon Hub sites)
Salary: £38,682 - £46,580 per annum plus £10,000 joining bonus and £1,500 wellbeing allowance
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Haematology and Transfusion to join our Blood Sciences team. Pathology First operates across three sites in a hub and spoke model, with rotating duties across haematology and transfusion sections and sites.
Our hub site provides a high throughput service for non-urgent community work and specialist testing (factor assays, haemoglobinopathy screening, flow cytometry). The hospital laboratories at Southend and Basildon deliver urgent testing for acute admissions and inpatients, a full hospital transfusion service, and support for the cardiothoracic centre at Basildon and a substantial oncology/haemato-oncology workload. The Southend site features a biomedical scientist–led anticoagulant clinic. Main IT platform: Clinisys WinPath Enterprise. Equipment includes Werfen ACL TOPs, Beckman Coulter DXHs, Ortho Vision, and Bio-Rad D100s.
The role involves rotating across haematology and transfusion across sites, with around-the-clock shifts (unsocial shifts attract additional payments). The environment is fast-paced with a 1-hour turnaround for acute users, 2 hours for inpatients, and 4 hours for community requests.
You will require specialised knowledge of laboratory techniques, analyser platforms, and associated equipment. As a specialist you will independently report blood films and identify atypical blood group antibodies. You will have a role in training less experienced staff and will be involved in quality management, including auditing and document review. You will need to be conversant with the main laboratory information management system and middleware applications. We will consider sponsoring suitable employees on a relevant MSc course.
About you and Qualifications are listed below.
We welcome applications from candidates who can work across three sites, including 24-hour hospital operations.
Uplift for band 2-6 roles includes a Wellbeing Allowance up to £1,500 per annum. For band 5 & 6 roles with night shift requirements, enhanced night shift payment applies.
At SYNLAB, we emphasise well-being and offering a rewards package, including a Wellbeing Allowance up to £1,500 per annum for Band 2-6 roles.
