Job description
Overview

Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Blood Sciences (CPP) position at The Christie Pathology Partnership (CPP). A qualified and experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist is required to join the Blood Sciences department. CPP supports training and development, and there are plans under discussion for an Advanced Pathology Centre at the Christie. This is an excellent opportunity for a BMS to develop at one of the largest cancer centres in Europe.

Main duties

The role involves participating in the scientific work of the Blood Sciences department in line with the 24/7 shift rota. You will provide support across all areas of the laboratory, carry out designated duties in line with local working practices, and maintain high professional standards while adhering to Health and Safety regulations. You will perform and interpret routine and specialist biomedical investigations autonomously, ensuring patient results are accurate and delivered within agreed quality standards and turnaround times, under the supervision of senior staff. You will implement and propose improvements to procedures and may act as a lead specialist. Commitment to ongoing personal and professional development through academic study and practical experience is expected, alongside providing leadership, guidance and training to Basic Grade staff, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants. As a registered Biomedical Scientist, you will uphold the professional standards of conduct set by the Health Professions Council and provide specialist technical advice to clinicians regarding test appropriateness and reporting timescales.

Job responsibilities
  • Participate in and assist with clinical trials, development of new tests and research & validation of equipment, ensuring compliance with policies required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management practices.
  • Provide technical advice to clinical staff.
  • Perform and interpret routine and specialist Biomedical investigations and participate daily in the scientific and technical activities of the laboratory under the supervision of senior staff.
  • Assist Senior staff in ensuring compliance with policies required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management.
  • Utilise the laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system and other application software according to authorised protocols, including assisting in data entry, document review, non-conformance review and quality assurance processes.
  • Communicate clearly with colleagues and clinicians, attending and contributing to meetings as directed by Laboratory senior staff.
  • Plan and prioritise work allocations, training plans, audits of self and junior staff, and respond to routine and urgent activities.
  • Encourage continuous professional development and support the introduction of new technologies and systems as a change advocate.
  • Report incidents and adverse events and enter information into Datix in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate ongoing competency and participate in CPD activities.
Safety
  • Observe safety regulations and attend mandatory courses as required.
  • Assist in investigations of incidents and participate in risk assessment monitoring.
  • Ensure equipment within the area of work is maintained and operated according to SOPs.
  • Comply with The Christie policy for annual mandatory updates and have knowledge of COSHH and Lifting and Handling Policies.

Qualifications
  • HCPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist in Blood Sciences discipline and evidence of CPD
  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical degree or equivalent
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent (required for Band 6)
  • Advanced understanding of basic theoretical and practical Biomedical Sciences and proficiency in majority of routine and advanced laboratory procedures
