Overview

The Directorate of Security (DOS) supports Human and Public Protection Services (HMPPS) in preventing victims by creating a secure and stable environment. The Serious and Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) delivers HMPPS’ response to threats of Serious and Organised Crime. This regional role is non-operational and will be based mainly from the DOS Regional Hubs, with occasional remote work and travel to prisons as required.

Responsibilities
  • Collect and monitor information through a variety of platforms (PIN, phone, video call, CCTV, mail monitoring).
  • Ensure all suspicious activities are reported in compliance with the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) and elevated to the Regional SOCU Lead/Deputy Lead when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records and a database of authorised RIPA authorities, ensuring timely reviews and authorisations.
  • Manage the Digital Case Management System and perform related administrative duties.
  • Monitor movements and associations of identified SOI through mail and PIN phone surveillance.
  • Liaise with analysts in the RIU and SOCU to share knowledge of banded nominals cases for high‑quality communication monitoring.
  • Work independently, sometimes in establishments at short notice to support tactical disruption interventions.
  • Prepare documentation for verification/quality checking and attend relevant meetings.
  • Undertake specialist training as required and develop professional relationships with stakeholders.
  • Understand and comply with national/local policies and legislation.
