Job description
Overview

Required: March/April 2026. Reporting to: Finance Director. Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum according to skills & experience. Hours: Full Time. Closing date: Monday 26th January 2026 at 12:00 noon.

This role offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive experience across all core areas of accounting, including ledgers, reconciliations, payroll support, budgeting and audit preparation. You will contribute to maintaining robust financial controls and compliance while developing your expertise in strategic planning and reporting.

Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance and supervise finance office operations, including pension operations, debt management, billing and invoicing, and accounts.
  • Generate accurate bi‑weekly payment runs and remittance advices; ensure suppliers are paid promptly.
  • Complete timely reconciliations of key control accounts and maintain clear documentation.
  • Collate pupil billing information, generate fee notes and ensure income is correctly recorded and reconciled.
  • Post non‑purchase ledger payments and perform regular reconciliations to maintain a clear picture of cash flow.
  • Manage monthly fee submissions and reconcile related income.
  • Process staff expense claims efficiently and accurately.
  • Perform termly reconciliations of key expense accounts to support accurate budget tracking.
  • Prepare and submit Early Years (Nursery) funding claims to the County Council and reconcile related income.
  • Oversee the accounting and documentation of new pupil deposits.
  • Take lead in routine credit control activity to maintain healthy cash flow.
  • Support audit preparation by preparing schedules and documentation for external audits.
  • Prepare budget reports to track and control departmental spending.
  • Ensure all financial activities align with School policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Provide support to the Payroll Clerk during monthly payroll processing, reviewing calculations.
  • Undertake any other tasks reasonably assigned by the Finance Director, COO or Headmaster.
Qualifications
  • ACA/ACCA qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent IT skills and sound knowledge of Office 365 (particularly Excel).
  • Proficiency with digital accounting software.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and prioritise workload effectively.
  • A meticulous eye for detail.
  • Outstanding communication skills, able to work well within a small team and establish good working relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  • Prior knowledge of iFinance / iSAMS would be advantageous, but training will be provided.
Hours of Work

The Senior Finance Officer will work from 08:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, with a one‑hour lunch break.

Salary & Benefits

Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum according to skills and experience.

Holiday entitlement: Five weeks per annum plus Bank Holidays, rising to six weeks after 5 years of service.
