Job description
About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Environmental Specialist to set the standard for environmental excellence across our major projects.

In this role, you’ll provide expert, multidisciplinary environmental advice, drive strong contractor performance through trusted relationships, and champion best‑practice environmental management on large construction works. You’ll lead a robust assurance program that ensures full environmental and planning compliance, while building internal capability and embedding a mature, contemporary approach to incident management, critical thinking and project delivery.

You’ll work closely with contractors and stakeholders to ensure clear accountabilities, high‑quality investigations, effective incident response and continuous improvement—escalating issues when needed and following them through to resolution. As a key advisor to the Major Transmission Project Team, you’ll guide environment and heritage decisions in line with our Environmental Management System, support ISO14001 certification, and ensure all project requirements are implemented effectively, whether by us or on our behalf.

If you’re a proactive environmental leader who sees risks early, drives operational excellence and delivers confident, consistent advice, we’d love to hear from you.

About you

Ideally you will be based in the North / North West of Tasmania, given the location of a project. We are open to Southern based candidates; however, you will need to be willing to travel frequently.

To be successful in this role, you’ll have a degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related field or equivalent experience with at least seven years working in a similar senior environmental role. You’ll bring advanced knowledge of Commonwealth, State and Local Government environmental, planning and heritage legislation, along with a solid grasp of contemporary environmental and cultural heritage issues.

You’ll have demonstrated success leading environmental assurance programmes, delivering complex initiatives end‑to‑end, and contributing effectively within high‑performing teams. Experience managing contractors on major works is essential, as are strong organisational skills and the ability to balance competing priorities.

You’ll be self‑led, adaptable, resilient and comfortable working in a dynamic, sometimes ambiguous environment. Strong judgement, a pragmatic risk‑based approach, and excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder skills will set you up for success. Proficiency across the Microsoft Office suite is expected.
