Job Title
Senior Manager of Engineering (Customer Platform)
Company Overview
Atreides helps organizations transform large and complex multi-modal datasets into information-rich geo-spatial data subscriptions that can be used across a wide spectrum of use cases. Currently, Atreides focuses on providing high-fidelity data solutions to enable customers to derive insights quickly.
Atreides transforms the chaos of petabyte-scale, all-domain data—land, air, sea, space, and cyber—into real-time operational clarity. We are a fast-moving, high-performance international scale company. We trust our team with autonomy, believing it leads to better results and job satisfaction. With a mission-driven mindset and entrepreneurial spirit, we are building something new and helping unlock the power of massive-scale data to make the world safer, stronger, and more prosperous.
Team Overview
We are a passionate team of technologists, data scientists, and analysts with backgrounds in operational intelligence, law enforcement, large multinationals, and cybersecurity operations. We obsess about designing products that will change the way global companies, governments and nonprofits protect themselves from external threats and global adversaries.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Manager of Engineering to lead the full stack teams building end-to-end solutions for users to interact with Atreides data. Your teams will design and deliver datastores, APIs, and user interfaces that allow users to query, visualize, and export data from our fusion engines.
You will recruit, manage, and grow a team of engineers building high-quality, maintainable, and scalable software. You will collaborate closely with Infrastructure, SRE, Data Engineering, Cyber Security, and our Analyst and Product teams to deliver capabilities for our internal and external customers.
Team Principles
- Curiosity and passion in all aspects of our work
- Clear, direct communication
- Embracing efficiency and innovation
- Valuing diverse ideas and technologies
- Leading with empathy in all interactions
Responsibilities
People & Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and coach full stack engineers, providing technical guidance and career development.
- Actively recruit and hire top talent in partnership with the Recruiting/People team.
- Create a culture where respectful debate is encouraged, followed by strong alignment and execution (“disagree and commit”).
- Maintain a steady, composed approach under pressure, guiding teams through ambiguity and technical complexity while staying focused on mission-critical outcomes.
Product, Domain & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with Product Management, Analysts, and BD to define and deliver the roadmap for user-facing applications over Atreides data fusion products.
- Work directly with internal and external users to understand workflows around querying, visualizing, and exporting geospatial and multi-modal data (examples include satellite, RF, OPIR, Ad Tech, AIS/ADSB, CTV, FMV).
- Collaborate with Infrastructure, SRE, Cyber Security, Data Engineering, and vendor support to identify and resolve cross-team risks, dependencies, and constraints.
Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Provide architectural direction for full stack systems including web frontends, APIs, and backend services.
- Ensure the stack is modern and maintainable:
- Frontend using modern JavaScript/TypeScript and frameworks such as React
- Backend using modern server-side languages (e.g., Python) and frameworks (e.g., FastAPI).
- Data infrastructure including relational SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL), OLAP engines (e.g., DuckDB, StarRocks), and data lake technologies (e.g., Iceberg, Snowflake).
- Cloud environments on AWS, Azure, and/or GCP.
- Ensure systems can support rapid data ingestion, complex processing, and low-latency queries on extremely large datasets.
- Own and evolve engineering best practices: code review standards, CI/CD, automated testing, deployment strategies, and documentation.
Reliability, Operations & Incident Management
- Ensure high availability for customer-facing systems, meeting strict customer availability requirements.
- Define and guide the implementation of monitoring, logging, and alerting to enable proactive issue detection and performance optimization.
- Design and enforce an on-call structure and escalation paths in partnership with SRE; ensure clear ownership for system components.
- Foster a culture of operational excellence via structured post-mortems and continuous improvement after incidents.
- Provide leadership for remote and on-site system support (including after-hours rotation), ensuring engineering is appropriately engaged on critical issues.
- Oversee preventive, corrective, and adaptive maintenance practices (e.g., log analysis, software deployments, and hardware/LRU coordination with relevant teams).
Cloud Cost Management & KPIs
- Partner with Infrastructure and Finance to manage cloud costs across AWS/Azure/GCP, balancing performance, scalability, and spend.
- Implement and govern cost monitoring, budget controls, and rightsizing strategies for compute, storage, and networking.
- Define, track, and socialize engineering KPIs (e.g., reliability, throughput, defect rates, incident metrics) to drive transparency and continuous improvement.
Desired Qualifications
- Proven experience growing and managing remote engineering teams delivering complex end-to-end full stack applications.
- Strong technical background across:
- Modern server-side development (Ruby, Python, Node or similar) and web frameworks (Rails, Django, Express, etc.).
- Modern frontend development (ES6+, React or similar frameworks).
- Web APIs, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, web server technologies (e.g., Nginx, WebSockets).
- Multiple database paradigms: relational SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL), OLAP (e.g., DuckDB, StarRocks), and data lake technologies (e.g., Iceberg, Snowflake).
- Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, and/or GCP).
- Demonstrated track record of building high-quality, maintainable, tested, and scalable software systems.
- Strong troubleshooting, fault isolation and problem-solving skills; able to guide teams to root cause and durable fixes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to drive clarity on complex technical topics and have direct conversations when needed.
- Experience setting and tracking measurable goals, and driving accountability at team and individual levels.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in cross-functional project settings.
- Willingness to support occasional travel and after-hours work when critical technical issues arise.
- Bonus: Knowledge or experience in visualizing remote sensing, GIS, satellite ground stations, satellite communication systems, RF communication links, and electrical/mechanical systems.
