Job description

As MWH Treatment embarks on its new journey as one of Northumbrian Water’s (NWL) capital delivery partners (part of NWL’s new Living Water Enterprise Organisation), we are looking to strengthen our Engineering team with a Senior Mechanical Engineer. Based predominantly in the Essex & Suffolk region, you will report directly to the Regional Discipline Lead (Mechanical) or the Senior Design Manager. This role will require traveling to other MWH regions initially to embed and support your career within the MWH Treatment culture.

Our programme of work, across a variety of water and wastewater schemes, is expected to be in the region of £280M.

Key responsibilities will include:
  1. Report to Principal Engineer, Design Managers, Technical Discipline Lead, and Regional Discipline Lead.
  2. Produce design layouts that are cost-effective, meet specifications, and are feasible for construction and commissioning.
  3. Produce and check all design deliverables, including specifications, schedules, drawings, and calculations.
  4. Collaborate with other disciplines for the development of site/plant 3D models.
  5. Ensure standard designs and practices are utilized wherever possible.
  6. Deliver design stage outputs within the agreed timescale and budget.
  7. Coordinate design outputs across all technical disciplines.
  8. Maintain competitiveness.
  9. Provide estimates and feedback for proposals.
  10. Establish relationships with construction staff and supply chain to promote buildability and efficiency.
  11. Follow procedures and processes for continuous department development.
  12. Assist in developing and monitoring procedures and processes.
  13. Write, update, and monitor procedures to ensure departmental efficiency.
  14. Coordinate designs with all internal and external disciplines to benefit the overall contract.
  15. Maintain files and records throughout the contract duration.
  16. Ensure customer satisfaction, recognizing it as key to achieving objectives.
  17. Maintain a personal development plan.
  18. Assist in supervising and developing staff.
  19. Ensure a safe working environment for all staff.
  20. Minimize waste from departmental activities.
  21. Design considering environmental issues.
  22. Ensure compliance with CDM 2015 Regulations and health and safety requirements.
Essential requirements:
  • Proven experience and knowledge of engineering principles including structures, materials, hydraulics, and environmental engineering.
  • Understanding of water and sewage treatment principles.
  • Experience in managing/mentoring staff in designing water and sewage treatment plant aspects.
  • Membership of a professional institution, chartered or nearing chartership.
Preferable qualifications:
  • Relevant discipline Engineering degree.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Relevant Master's Degree.
  • Minimum HND in relevant discipline.
Additional skills:
  • Ability to rationalize designs and produce economical plant layouts.
  • Good knowledge of water treatment aspects, including mechanical, process, electrical engineering, and project management.
  • Understanding of roles under CDM 2015 Regulations.
  • Knowledge of industry standards (BS, WIMES, BSRIA, etc.) and HSE regulations (PUWER, LOLER, PSSR 2000, DSEAR, etc.).
  • Flexible mindset and ability to handle large data sets.
  • Effective communication skills for technical proposals.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Driving license.
