Job summary

Qualifications

  • Entry on the GMC Register with a recognised Medical degree.
  • Two up-to-date advanced life support courses (ALS or ACLS, ATLS or ETC, APLS, PALS or EPALS).
  • Completion of the MRCEM Primary examination or MRCGP.
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge in Emergency Medicine.
  • Proficiency in practical clinical skills required in an ED setting.

Responsibilities

  • Initial diagnosis, resuscitation and overall clinical management of all patients presenting to A&E.
  • Appropriate follow-up, referral or discharge, and liaison with community partners.
  • Supervision and support of junior doctors.
  • Participation in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Contributions to research and audit projects.

Job Title: Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine

Contract: Fixed term, 02.03.2026 – 28.02.2027 (12 months, full‑time)

Grade: Doctor – other – Hospital medical and dental staff (Salary £65,048 – £73,992 per annum pro rata)

About the Hospital

Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a University Teaching Hospital with a “Good” rating from the CQC. It serves a population of over 200,000 and offers a range of general, paediatric and specialist services. The campus is expanding with new ward blocks and the Women and Children’s Centre (expected 2030). The hospital partners with the University of Buckingham and the University of Oxford and is a teaching site for the University of Buckingham Medical School and HETV.

Responsibilities

The Senior Clinical Fellow will work closely with ED consultants and nurses to manage acute adult and paediatric emergencies. Key duties include:

  • Initial diagnosis, resuscitation and overall clinical management of all patients presenting to A&E.
  • Appropriate follow‑up, referral or discharge, and liaison with community partners such as GPs, health visitors and district nurses.
  • Supervision and support of junior doctors, advising and reviewing cases as necessary while on the shop floor.
  • Participation in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students from the University of Buckingham and other affiliated institutions.
  • Involvement in simulation teaching, including bi‑monthly sessions for SHOs, middle grades and multidisciplinary teaching.
  • Contributions to research and audit projects, including appraisal of evidence‑based literature and reporting of clinical governance outcomes.

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • Entry on the GMC Register with a recognised Medical degree.
  • Two up‑to‑date advanced life support courses (ALS or ACLS, ATLS or ETC, APLS, PALS or EPALS).
  • Completion of the MRCEM Primary examination or MRCGP.

Desirable

  • Full MRCEM or FRCEM.
  • Instructor qualification in ATLS/ALS/APLS/EPLS.
  • MIMMS accreditation.
Knowledge & Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge in Emergency Medicine.
  • Experience in clinical decision‑making, risk management and prioritisation.
  • Proficiency in practical clinical skills required in an ED setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in varied clinical environments.
  • Awareness of clinical governance, error reporting and audit participation.

Desirable: 12 months of Emergency Medicine experience.

Communication, Teaching & Leadership Skills

Communication

  • Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to interact with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.

Teaching

  • Evidence of organising and delivering teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Leadership & Management

  • Effective organisation and management of clinical workload.
  • Motivation and development of training medical staff.
  • Interest in medical management (desirable).
Other Requirements
  • Ability to work independently and as part of the Emergency Medicine Clinical Support Unit.
  • Balancing individual responsibilities with Directorate and Trust priorities.
  • Desirable: participation in Clinical Directorate Management.
Research & Audit

Essential

  • Able to appraise research.
  • Understanding of evidence‑based medicine.

Desirable

  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals relating to Emergency Medicine.
  • Participation in Emergency Medicine‑based research projects.
Additional Information

The post requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check and compliance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
