Job description
Overview

Senior Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) for the Immunology laboratory based at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford. The Immunology service serves the Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN) and operates within UKAS ISO 15189; 2022 accredited pathology disciplines. Services include autoimmune serology, allergy, protein electrophoresis, specific protein measurement and cryoprotein investigations. The laboratory collaborates with consultant Immunologists to support allergy and immunology clinics and to plan delivery and development of laboratory services. Immunology has a strong training ethos linked to career development and progression.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a laboratory section and a team of Biomedical Scientists and Assistant Health Care Scientists; deliver a medical laboratory service focused on patient care and resource management within the Trust.
  • Ensure laboratory work is performed to a consistently high standard and meets quality expectations.
  • Undertake scientific tasks across appropriate sections, monitor Trainee Biomedical Scientists and (S)AHCS where applicable.
  • Produce timely, accurate results and reports in line with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Carry out routine analytical work using automated and manual techniques.
  • Make timely, accurate decisions regarding the efficient and safe operation of the laboratory, considering health and safety and relevant legislation; supervise and support BMSs & AHCSs in decision making as needed.
  • Develop and implement systems and procedures to ensure service efficiency and legal compliance.
  • Demonstrate initiative in all areas of work; organise day-to-day workflow within the designated section.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • HCPC registration.
  • Level 7 qualification in a relevant subject (see job description for details).
  • Significant Immunology knowledge and experience with a track record of managing staff and laboratory resources.
  • Evidence of achieving targets, implementing service developments and transformation initiatives; strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to converse effectively in English for customer-facing roles.
  • Eligibility for UK Visas and Immigration sponsorship considerations where applicable.
  • Disclosure and Barring checks required where applicable; enhanced checks for roles with children or vulnerable adults.
  • Must be able to work within a no-smoking policy on all sites.
Desirable/Additional Information
  • Experience leading immunology services and managing laboratory resources; ability to plan service development and transformation initiatives.
  • Knowledge of quality systems and compliance with ISO standards within a pathology setting.
