Job description

GSL Education are looking for a committed SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist Alternative Provision in the Haxby area. This role suits someone passionate about supporting pupils with SEND, SEMH needs and those who have faced challenges in mainstream education.

About the School

The provision supports learners aged 4–16 who benefit from smaller groups, therapeutic support and personalised learning pathways. Pupils follow an adapted curriculum that includes core subjects, life-skills and vocational options, delivered through a nurturing and relationship-focused model.

SEN Teaching Assistant Responsibilities
  • Support pupils 1:1 and in small groups
  • Assist with tailored learning plans and therapeutic approaches
  • Encourage emotional regulation and communication
  • Support academic tasks and life-skills activities
  • Work closely with teachers, keyworkers and pastoral teams
Requirements
  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEND or SEMH needs in school, community or care settings
  • Confidence using de‑de-escalation strategies and trauma‑informed approaches
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting, positive relationships
  • Patience, resilience and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations
  • A good understanding of how to support emotional regulation and social development
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply for one
