Job summary

Education Authority (Northern Ireland) is seeking a Classroom Assistant to support pupils with special educational needs within and beyond the classroom. You will work under the class teacher to implement education and care plans, encourage independence, and ensure safeguarding and safety policies are followed.

The role focuses on assisting with personalised learning, supporting access to the curriculum, and helping pupils participate in activities while maintaining a supportive classroom

Qualifications

• Hold a minimum of Level 2 qualification in a relevant area.
• Minimum of 6 weeks experience in a formal learning environment.
• Option 2: Have a minimum of 12 months’ experience in a formal learning environment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety requirements.
• Demonstrate understanding of development needs of children/young people.
• Demonstrate knowledge of child protection and safeguarding.
• Demonstrate effective planning and organising skills.
• Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team.
• Demonstrate effective and positive communication skills.
• Demonstrate confidentiality in handling pupil information.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the educational support and care of pupil(s) with special educational needs in or outside the classroom.
• Assist with authorised programmes (Education Plan, Care Plan) and participate in evaluation.
• Contribute to inclusion of pupil(s) in mainstream schools under directions of the class teacher.
• Assist with operational difficulties and non-invasive medical/clinical difficulties pertaining to pupil disabilities.
• Support behavioural management programmes as directed.
• Assist pupil(s) in moving around school and on/off transport.
• Clarify and explain instruction; ensure pupils can use equipment and materials provided.
• Promote independence and supervise groups or individuals on activities.
• Provide continuity of adult care including supervision, toileting, medicines administration as required.
• Ensure a safe environment and report signs needing attention.
