Respiratory Consultant with a Specialist Interest in Lung Cancer

The closing date is 27 February 2026

Applications are invited for a Consultant post in Respiratory Medicine with a special interest in Lung Cancer at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

This role will support the continued development of respiratory services at Glenfield Hospital, which has a national and international reputation for its academic and clinical services.

Job responsibilities
  • Assess all patients in the Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) following referrals from GPs, 999 ambulances and the Emergency Department.
  • Manage five base respiratory wards (129 beds) with sub‑specialist themes: short stay unit (Ward 20), non‑invasive ventilation (Ward 15), cystic fibrosis & chronic suppurative lung disease (Ward 16), TB & higher dependency (Ward 17), pleural disease & cancer (Ward 29).
  • Lead the ongoing development and innovation of respiratory services, collaborating with academic partners at the Universities of Leicester and Loughborough.
  • Provide advanced bronchoscopic and pleural techniques, administer chairside therapies for lung cancer and contribute to overnight ward care.
  • Engage in teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees and mentor junior staff.
  • Participate in research and quality improvement, maintaining and publishing audit data.
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Fully accredited for Higher Specialist training or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Membership of relevant specialist societies (e.g. BTS, ERS, BTOG).
  • Higher degree (e.g. MSc, MD) or equivalent preferred.
Experience
  • Comprehensive clinical experience in respiratory medicine, pleural diseases and lung cancer.
  • Excellent clinical skills and experience meeting all aspects of the job plan.
  • Demonstrated analytical thinking and sound clinical judgment.
  • Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.
Management & Leadership
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors.
  • Organisation, prioritisation and management of clinical workload.
  • Experience in leading teams and understanding modern NHS priorities.
  • Effective negotiation, influencing and persuasion skills to overcome barriers to change.
  • Knowledge of service development issues and management/administration experience.
  • Management training on an accredited course (preferred).
Communication Skills
  • Proficient written and spoken English to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues.
  • Builds rapport, listens, persuades and negotiates effectively.
  • Highly developed emotional intelligence and empathy.
  • High standard of written and verbal presentation.
  • Track record of successful change management and ability to maintain focus in demanding environments.
Motivation
  • Motivates and develops both medical and non‑medical staff in pleural/lung cancer service.
  • Personal integrity, reliability and commitment to further developing the post and the service.
Audit & Quality Improvement
  • Effective participation in and commitment to clinical audit.
  • Experience with quality improvement programmes and audit work.
  • Completed formal courses in audit and quality improvement.
  • Published audit reports including quality improvement evidence.
Research
  • Understanding and interest in research, critical appraisal skills.
  • Applies research to clinical practice and supervises junior research projects.
  • Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer‑reviewed journals on relevant subjects.
Teaching
  • Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate training, especially in pleural procedures and thoracic ultrasound.
  • Enthusiastic, able to inspire and lead others.
  • Assessment of clinical competence and appraisal skills.
  • Post‑ qualification in teaching and training or running courses.
  • Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching.
