A leading UK research university is seeking a talented Research Fellow to develop a high-power inductively coupled plasma torch system for assessing atmospheric re-entry emissions. The successful candidate will design and validate plasma generators, optimize torch designs, and develop computational fluid dynamics models. A PhD in a relevant field is essential, along with experience in numerical modeling and strong communication skills. This role offers the chance to contribute to innovative research in plasma technology and environmental sustainability.
We are seeking a talented and motivated Research Fellow to join a multidisciplinary team developing a scalable high-power inductively coupled plasma torch for assessing atmospheric re-entry emissions and environmental impact. This project will develop a high-enthalpy inductively coupled plasma torch system to simulate the extreme thermal environments of spacecraft atmospheric re-entry, enabling advanced testing of thermal protection materials and emissions characterisation to support the design of cleaner deorbiting systems. You will work under the supervision of Prof. Minkwan Kim, collaborating with an industry partner and the UK Space Agency.
You should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Plasma physics, Aerodynamics, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering. Essential criteria include experience in numerical modelling of plasma flows and discharge, with desirable expertise in plasma diagnostics and RF plasma. Strong communication and writing skills are required.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of plasma technology and space sustainability.
