Overview

Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust (GHC) provides joined-up mental health, physical health and learning disability services to people of all ages across Gloucestershire. We are looking for talented Qualified Dental Nurses to work as part of a team providing essential out of hours emergency dental care to patients. This will include assisting chairside as well as a high level of clinical assessment and pharmacy/analgesic advice.

Role details: fixed term/secondment basis for 12 months. Hours are part-time 12 hours per month. Internal applicants should discuss secondment suitability with their line manager.

Note: This role is not eligible for sponsorship as per the Government\'s UK VISA and Immigration Rules and Regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake definitive clinical telephone assessment (triage) of patients with dental symptoms.
  • Triage patient calls using the SDCEP guidance.
  • Be proficient in the use of all dental equipment including performance checks and identifying maintenance issues.
  • Set up and close down of surgeries following infection control guidelines.
  • Make available fine instruments and materials for clinical use, with thorough knowledge of all instruments, equipment and materials used.
  • Interpret the needs of both patients and clinicians and respond promptly and efficiently.
  • Assist the Dental Officer with patient care including suction, material mixing and passing instruments; this work may involve handling contaminated tools and passing sharps between the Dental Officer and the nurse.
  • Provide definitive clinical telephone assessment (triage) of patients and chair side Dental Nurse support to dentists delivering emergency pain treatment.
  • Provide decontamination and infection control duties and ensure all areas are cleaned and sterilised in accordance with HTM01-5 regulations during Out of Hours sessions.
  • Answer all calls from the general public in an efficient and courteous manner and accurately record or amend details on the call dental software system.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Qualified Dental Nurse with current registration.
  • Experience in chairside assistance, clinical assessment, infection control and dental radiography workflows is implied by responsibilities.
  • Ability to work during Out of Hours sessions and to adapt to urgent care settings.
Additional Duties and Standards
  • Complete training in recognition of and assistance during medical emergencies (e.g., anaphylaxis, epileptic fit, cardiac arrest, shock).
  • Ensure Emergency Drug Box is available during all clinical sessions and monitor patients during emergencies.
  • Undertake CPR with the dentist in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Close down of surgery each day including sealing and removal of contaminated waste in clinical waste bags.
  • Handle patients, stock and equipment following manual handling techniques; process radiographs and ensure accurate labeling and filing of x-rays.
  • Ensure records are available when required, including medical history forms and x-rays; understand patient charges and exemptions and ensure correct recording.
  • Undertake reception duties as required including handling card and cash payments and end-of-day banking processes.
  • File and retrieve patient information on computer and paper records.
  • Maintain infection control and decontamination standards in line with regulations and local policies.
  • This role is not eligible for sponsorship as per the Government\'s visa rules.
