Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer to deliver power transmission infrastructure as part of the UK Energy business. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to design protection schemes for networks delivering Net Zero across the UK.

The role offers hybrid working with opportunities to develop expertise and mentor others, contributing to landmark projects and drawing on state‑of‑the‑art tools in a diverse, inclusive environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering.
• Proven experience in the design of protection and control schemes.
• Knowledge of Electrical Networks and Engineering standards.
• Experience interpreting technical design documentation.
• Knowledge of main suppliers’ substation control equipment (ABB/Hitachi, Siemens, GE).
• Experience with IEC 61850 and IEC 60870 protocols.
• Preferable – Chartered engineer status or working towards.
• Preferable – National Grid BP141 Authorisation.

Responsibilities

• Design protection and control systems for electrical power transmission and distribution networks.
• Develop detailed engineering drawings and design documentation using AutoCAD and ETAP.
• Perform technical calculations and analysis to ensure reliability of protection and control systems.
• Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations and environmental guidelines.
• Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather data for design purposes.
• Collaborate with project managers, electrical engineers and construction teams to integrate protection and control design requirements into project plans.
• Review and approve design modifications and provide technical support during installation and commissioning.
• Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in protection and control technology and design practices.
