Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer within the UK Energy business to deliver reliable protection schemes for power transmission networks and help drive Net Zero ambitions. You'll work in a multidisciplinary team across projects, with opportunities to design, analyse, and specify systems using AutoCAD and ETAP, and collaborate with Grid and construction teams.

Qualifications

• Minimum HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering.
• Proven experience in the design of protection and control schemes.
• Knowledge of Electrical Networks and Engineering standards.
• Experience interpreting technical documentation relating to design.
• Knowledge and experience with substation control equipment brands (ABB/Hitachi/Siemens/GE).
• Experience with IEC 61850 and IEC 60870 protocols.
• Preferable – Chartered engineer status.
• Preferable – National Grid BP141 Authorisation.

Responsibilities

• Design protection and control systems for electrical power transmission and distribution networks.
• Develop detailed drawings, specifications, and design documentation using AutoCAD and ETAP.
• Perform technical calculations and analyses to ensure reliability and performance of protection and control systems.
• Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
• Conduct site surveys and data gathering for design purposes.
• Collaborate with project managers, electrical engineers, and construction teams to integrate design requirements into plans.
• Review and approve design modifications; provide technical support during installation and commissioning.
• Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in protection and control technology and design practices.
