Job description

The Department of Architecture (www.arch.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position. The professorship is located at the Institute of Design and Architecture IEA (www.iea.arch.ethz.ch).

The new professor is mainly responsible for teaching a design studio and giving lectures for students in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programme in Architecture, including the supervision of Master’s theses. Teaching will cover theoretical foundations, methodological skills and specialized knowledge in the field of design and integration of contemporary infrastructures. Positioned at the intersection of architecture, landscape and urban planning, it will promote a contextual and sustainable vision beyond purely functional and technological approaches. Contemporary digital design and production techniques are, in general, an integral part of the sustainable architectural debate.

The new professor is expected to propose and develop a state-of-the-art research agenda. The focus is on the investigation and development of relevant topics that contribute to the advancement of architecture as a discipline, through a mutual interaction between theory and practice. All activities should be consistent with the principles of Baukultur, paying particular attention to the cultural, ecological and social dimensions of infrastructure. The position requires a strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with professorships among the Department of Architecture and across ETH Zurich. Of particular importance is the collaboration with the chairs at the Institute of Design and Architecture (IEA) and strong interest in cooperation with the chairs at the Institute of Landscape and Urban Studies (LUS).

Successful candidates must have a substantial built oeuvre and competence in design and realization of high-quality architecture with infrastructural relevance. They have a background in architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, or a related interdisciplinary field. Qualifications include a university degree, accreditation by architects and usually experience, both in research and teaching. Competence in leading a group and contribution to the development of the Department of Architecture beyond the boundaries of the discipline are expected. In general, at ETH Zurich courses are taught in German or English.

ETH Zurich is an equal opportunity and family-friendly employer, values diversity, and is responsive to the needs of dual-career couples and care responsibilities.
