Overview

hVIVO is seeking a Principal Scientist (Immunology or Virology) to act as our SME, providing consultative advice across multiple projects and throughout the business.

hVIVO conducts human challenge clinical trials. The goal is to potentially eradicate common illnesses like the cold and flu or make their treatment easier and more effective. Volunteers are central to our work. Our studies focus on testing new treatments on real people in a safe, controlled environment.

The Principal Scientist will lead the scientific development of lab operational staff, develop training plans, and deliver study management training programs.

This is a client-facing role, involving detailed scientific discussions to support project setup, requiring technical knowledge of lab assays and virology or immunology.

This role also involves analyzing and reporting scientific and strategic risks, making recommendations to senior management.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide full Study Management including input into clinical protocols, analytical plans, study compliance, risk management, timelines, budgets, and client communication.
  • Have expert knowledge in virology, current assays, and assay technology developments.
  • Understand viral infection mechanisms, antiviral drugs, vaccines, and disease clinical manifestations.
  • Possess expert knowledge of the Viral Challenge Model and clinical study design to advise clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Provide technical advice on clinical study design, ensuring compliance with GCP and regulatory standards.
  • Manage study support processes and team delivery.
  • Oversee study initiation, analytical planning, and resource assignment for experiments.
  • Recommend assay and model development, influencing scientific strategy.
  • Attend client meetings and conferences as a virology expert.
  • Collaborate on proposal development and study costing with senior management.
  • Understand contracts, finance, and scope change processes.
  • Identify and escalate scope deviations outside the contract.
  • Promote teamwork within project and clinical groups to meet timelines and budgets.

Skills & Experiences

First degree in relevant scientific subject or equivalent, PhD preferred.

Expertise in Virology or Immunology related to hVIVO's Viral Challenge Model.

Excellent communication, motivation, planning, and organizational skills.

Knowledge of GCP labs and ICH-GCP standards.

Ability to supervise, mentor, and work collaboratively.

Experience in project management, technical support, and line management. Additional qualifications like a Master’s degree and knowledge of H&S regulations are desirable.
