Job Summary

This role is for a principal clinical scientist in a joint clinical‑academic department of a large London teaching hospital, primarily responsible for leading the physics aspects of the Molecular Radiotherapy (MRT) service. The position supports both inpatient and outpatient MRT, including national referral services for somatostatin therapies and emerging radionuclide treatments.

Main Duties
  • Provide high‑quality scientific and technical support to the department’s clinical and research activities.
  • Lead the physics development of the molecular radiotherapy service, including protocol design, equipment updates, and new procedure implementation.
  • Deliver Duty Physicist cover for the Clinical Nuclear Medicine Service.
  • Act as the Medical Physics Expert for the department and for external departments supported by the Institute of Nuclear Medicine.
  • Contribute to audit, quality assurance, and the implementation of relevant policies and quality standards.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day management of the MRT nuclear medicine physics team.
  • Engage in research projects and provide teaching and supervision to staff.
About the Department

The Nuclear Medicine at UCLH offers a comprehensive nuclear medicine service, performing over 20 000 studies annually, with advanced imaging platforms and a growing radionuclide therapy programme. The department actively collaborates with internal and external researchers and participates in national translational research initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Essential: Good First Degree in a Physical Science or equivalent.
  • Relevant Masters or higher degree.
  • State‑registered Clinical Scientist or eligibility.
  • RPA2000 Certification as Medical Physics Expert or equivalent experience.
  • Desirable: Corporate membership of a Professional Institute or eligibility.
  • Doctoral degree or equivalent.
  • Experience in other relevant areas of medical physics.
Skills & Abilities
  • Essential: Experience and knowledge of quality management systems; proficiency with MS Office; ability to organise own workload and analyse scientific problems, particularly under pressure; demonstrated commitment to clinical research and development.
  • Desirable: Project management experience; ability to organise large project teams; programming skills in Python, C, IDL, or Matlab.
Personal & People Development
  • Essential: Participate in continuing professional development and maintain state registration.
  • Desirable: Undertake formal teaching when required; support students in research projects.
