Plaster Technician

An opportunity has arisen for a Qualified Plaster Technician to join an established team covering services across three main sites, supporting a comprehensive range of orthopaedic and trauma speciality clinics.

Applicants must have completed and passed the British Orthopaedic Association Casting Course and have preferable two years experience as a Plaster Technician.

The post holder will be accountable for all aspects of care requiring plaster casts/splints/braces whilst under the supervision of qualified staff.

To undertake and participate in statutory training and in‑service programme.

To participate in annual personal review being consistent of service needs.

Main duties of the job

To work as an autonomous practitioner within the service, compliance with local guidelines and prescribed care. As a member of the service the post holder will be required to direct, instruct and supervise trainee plaster technicians and other clinical staff i.e. medical and nursing staff, demonstrating high standards of cast application. To actively seek the views of patients and carers on their understanding of their care needs to ensure the patient experience is positive. To plan the workload of the plaster room to ensure effective and efficient utilisation of resources on a daily basis, organising staff cover arrangements where necessary. To be flexible to the needs of the service and patients at all times, ensuring a streamlined efficient service.

The successful applicant will work closely with qualified Plaster Technicians to carry out prescribed treatments while demonstrating evidence‑based practice and complying with the British Orthopaedic Association guidelines.

Trainees will also learn in depth anatomy and physiology to ensure safe and effective practice.

Trainees will be accountable for providing casting and splinting support within clinics as requested.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites – Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester‑le‑Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community‑based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

You will be working in the plaster room, able to work as an autonomous practitioner in compliance with local policies and procedures.

Workload will be allocated from clinics, A&E and theatre and the extent of this will differ daily.

It is important to manage your own workload, while ensuring effective and efficient utilisation of resources.

This role involves working across three sites to cover the needs and demands of the service.

Communication is an integral part of this role, receiving complex information from consultants and communicating with patients by providing advice pertaining to their fracture and casting management and enabling them to manage their own care needs.

Interpreting and recording information accurately into patient notes to ensure the correct care is given and acted upon in future is important, as is acknowledgement of the IT systems.

• Confidence to work with a large group of people. Ability to organise a large caseload of patients and organise the work of others while under pressure. Able to work across Trust sites. Able to manage complaints and de‑escalate concerns.
• To support other staff and recognise where support is needed.
