Isca Recruitment is delighted to working with a growing and well-regarded employer to find a proactive Payroll Manager. This is an exciting time to join an established Group based on the outskirts of Exeter and to take ownership of the payroll function whilst working closely with the Financial Controller and the HR Manager.

It is a rare opportunity for an experienced hands‑on payroll leader with a proactive approach to join a professional business that is leading the way in its sector and where you will genuinely make a difference.

Payroll Manager - The Role

You’ll be working as part of a friendly, dedicated finance team with duties will include:

  • Full monthly administration of the group business payrolls which comprises of seven businesses and eight payrolls (c500 employees total)
  • Responsible for the payment of all salaries and wages, including overseeing the calculation of maternity, paternity, overtime, as well as starters and leavers, PAYE, Pensions and NICs.
  • Leading on the payroll and pensions processes, ensuring accurate monthly pension & HMRC reporting and submissions.
  • Payroll reporting for senior management team, including variances, overtime reporting, etc.
  • Handling salary, pensions and tax queries and explaining information to employees.
  • Leading on the improvement of payroll systems and processes including the employee Self‑Service Portal and associated workflows.
  • Responsible for managing and maintaining company pension schemes accurately, including auto enrolment.
  • Compiling and fully auditing pension information including starters, leavers, and changes, submit monthly and annual returns and resolve queries arising.
  • Liaising with finance in relation to budget monitoring of staff costs.
  • Liaising with HR to ensure HR compliance in terms of legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Managing expenses process, validation of claims etc.

Salary: £48,000 - £55,000pa with benefits including 25 days holiday + bank holidays

Hours: 40 hrs per week, Mon - Fri

Location: Office, near Exeter

Payroll Manager - The Person

We are keen to hear from payroll professionals with current experience of managing end-to-end payroll and pension functions. You’re likely to be CIPP qualified or similar.

You’ll be a first‑rate communicator able to build rapport and liaise with colleagues across the business.

You will enjoy using your expertise - able to see the bigger picture and plan ahead whilst also being hands on to deliver an accurate and timely payroll and pensions function.

A natural problem‑solver with excellent attention to detail, you will also possess experience of working with payroll software.

You will be a self‑starter with a high energy approach and a desire to work in a fast‑paced changing organisation.

You will be a team player and enjoy working in a collaborative manner with colleagues at all levels in the business.

Strong IT skills including Excel and payroll software.
