Job summary

Epsom & St Helier trust are looking for a substantive full time painter and decorator. The successful candidate will be responsible for all decorating tasks, including surface preparation, painting, varnishing, and maintaining a clean and organised work area. They will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to create a supportive and caring environment for service users.

Main duties of the job

The Painter and Decorator will be responsible for leading all decorating tasks, ensuring proper preparation of surfaces, applying paint and other finishes, repairing and maintaining painted surfaces, and completing all work to a high standard within project timelines. They will assist with the selection and procurement of materials, maintain a safe work environment, and support the maintenance team as required.

Responsibilities
  • Lead all decorating tasks
  • Prepare surfaces for painting properly
  • Apply paint, varnish, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, or sprayers (as risk assessed)
  • Repair and maintain painted surfaces, including touch‑ups and refinishing
  • Ensure all decorating work is completed to a high standard and within project timelines
  • Assist with the selection and procurement of painting and decorating materials through the correct protocol
  • Maintain a clean and organised work area, ensuring all tools and equipment are properly stored
  • Follow health and safety guidelines to maintain a safe working environment
  • Assist in regular checks, repairs, and maintenance of all buildings
  • Assist the maintenance team where required and cover maintenance duties for periods of absence
  • Assist with coordinating and chaperoning contractors on‑site, completing any required paperwork
Qualifications
  • Previous experience in Painting and Decorating
  • Face‑to‑face experience of dealing with people
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond to the Maintenance Manager’s requests
Person Specification – Essential
  • Extensive experience in the Painting and Decorating industry
  • A recognised formal apprenticeship, attaining the relevant craft qualification (i.e. City and Guilds or NVQ 3) or equivalent
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Understanding of the requirements of COSHH regulations and Asbestos Awareness
  • Face‑to‑face experience of dealing with people
Person Specification – Desirable
  • HHS experience
  • Skills in plastering, tiling and decorating
  • IOSH Working Safely certification
  • A recognised competency certificate in the use of step ladders or ladders
